Ok im an ex smoker of 10 years my theory is that smoking permanently changes the alveoli in the lungs causing an interference In the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange as you breath in and out. This means your blood get an acidic build even in ex smokers. The end result is weak bones from acidic blood and eventually tumors from a heavy acidic environment. All of this is causes by simply breathing in and out and an incorrect oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange what do you think doctors med students etc?
